Malsteel is a metal that is known for its unusual physical properties, like its varying melting points depending on its state, or how it reacts to physical force.

== Properties ==
Malsteel is a black and dense material, and can feel quite heavy. It's non-toxic, and has a minor disinfectant property. Malsteel can't be enchanted, however, it can conduct mana and magic, though it isn't affected by mana or magic in general. Activated malsteel can store kinetic energy, though it won't retain this for too long. Once malsteel becomes dormant, any stored kinetic energy will unleash at once.

=== Thermal properties ===
Malsteel undergoes two different thermal transitions depending on the current state. When malsteel is dormant, its melting point is 10,000 °C, at which point it transitions to an activated state. When it is activated, it becomes soft at 40 °C, and undergoes another thermal transition at 50 °C, going back to its dormant state.

Malsteel is an effective heat conductor. Even just heating one small area will propagate through the entire piece.

=== Physical properties ===
Dormant malsteel is practically indestructible. Most kinetic force applied to it will be transferred over to any object behind it, even if it's air. It also barely makes any sound.

Activated malsteel is malleable, and, once at a high enough temperature, is soft enough that you can easily fuse two pieces of activated malsteel together.

== Obtaining malsteel ==
Malsteel is generally found in its activated state, which makes mining rather straightforward. However, one does have to be careful not to introduce heat, as this will propagate to the rest of the vein. If the temperature reaches 50 °C, it has to be mined all at once, otherwise you'll either have to find a way to heat it back up to 10,000 °C, or carve it out. Therefore, it's advised not to use heavy machinery, and to never hold a flame close by.

== Etymology ==
The name malsteel may have two different origins. One is the fact that it's derived from ''malleable steel''. Another possible explanation is that it was first found in the mines of the Malus Mountains.

== Possible applications ==
Because of its thermal conductivity, malsteel could theoretically be used to create a malsteel version of the Brazen Bull. Combined with the fact that activated malsteel can still be fused together at 40 °C or higher, it makes for a particularly effective execution device. One could put someone inside, fuse the latch closed, then flash-heat it to 50 °C, before beginning the execution.

== Trivia ==

* One joke explanation for the name malsteel was that someone yelled out "mah balls" when hit in the gonads by a bouncing pickaxe.

Malsteel is a metal that has known for its physical properties, like its varying melting points depending on its state, or how it reacts to physical force.

== Properties ==
Malsteel is a black and dense material, and can feel quite heavy. It's non-toxic, and has a minor disinfectant property. Malsteel can't be enchanted, however, it can conduct mana. Activated malsteel can store kinetic energy, though it won't retain this for too long. Once malsteel becomes dormant, any stored kinetic energy will unleash at once.

=== Thermal properties ===
Malsteel undergoes two different thermal transitions depending on the current state. When malsteel is dormant, its melting point is 10,000 °C. When it is activated, it becomes soft at 40 °C, and enters another thermal transition at 50 °C.

Malsteel is an effective heat conductor. Even just heating one small area will propagate through the entire piece.

=== Physical properties ===

== Obtaining malsteel ==

== Etymology ==
The name malsteel may have two different origins. One is the fact that it's derived from ''malleable steel''. Another possible explanation is that it was first found in the mines of the Malus Mountains.

== Possible applications ==
Because of its thermal conductivity, malsteel could theoretically be used to create a malsteel version of the Brazen Bull. Combined with the fact that activated malsteel can still be fused together,

== Trivia ==

* One joke explanation for the name malsteel was that someone yelled out "mah balls" when hit in the gonads by a bouncing pickaxe.

The '''Public Domain Fantasy Project''' is a collaborative reference work dedicated to discussing, documenting, and sharing fantasy concepts freely. Our goal is to create a collection that anyone can use without having to worry about rights. Hence the reason this archive uses the [[Public Domain Fantasy Project:Copyrights|Creative Commons Zero license]]. You are free to use it in your own works, both fiction and non-fiction, including, but not limited to literature, video games, television, film, and other media.

This project is not a novel, while it discusses fictional concepts, there is no overarching narrative or fictional continuity that everything has to fit in. It discusses fantasy concepts, characteristics, properties, mannerisms, and other information relevant to using it in your own works.

We want to encourage creativity, not dictate it.

== How does it differ from other projects? ==
While we have the utmost respect for other collaborative projects, the Public Domain Fantasy Project aims for a different goal. Most collaborative projects aim to build a shared fictional setting or ongoing narrative. This project instead is built to act as an encyclopedia, a reference work. There is no story, no narrative throughline. Everything is laid out bare, so that anyone can get inspiration for their own works.

While this project does keep a sort of canon, you are free to interpret is as you see fit. Most of the canon exists to provide a reference point an useful context, not hard rules that every creator must follow. You may decide to work around or even ignore parts of the canon if that fits your works better. You are free to change, reinterpret, or completely disregard any part of it.

There's another difference. Most collaborative efforts use a Creative Commons license like CC-BY-SA, which requires others who use the work to share derivatives under the same license. Our goal is different, in that we want people to use any part of it as they see fit. This is why we use the Creative Commons Zero license. We believe the concepts and reference material documented in the Public Domain Fantasy Project should be freely usable by everyone, rather than one individual or group. Nobody should have to ask permission to use the work, nor should they feel obligated to credit anyone.

This approach has quite some drawbacks. Once something is contributed, the original creator no longer has control over how to use, adapt or reinterpret it. Big companies can use these concepts as they like, without having to pay anyone or give credits to anyone. However, this also lowers the hurdle for smaller creatives, as they wouldn't have to check whether something can or can't be used due to licensing reasons.

While this project does keep a sort of canon, you are free to interpret is as you see fit. Most of the canon is here to provide context for your own canon, but aren't hard facts for every work.

We believe that some ideas, and specifically the ideas and concepts in the Public Domain Fantasy Project, belongs to everyone, rather than one individual or group. Nobody should have to ask permission to use the work, nor should they feel obligated to credit anyone.

This approach has quite some drawbacks. Once it's out, it's no longer yours, anyone can change what they want without needing to consult. Big companies can use these concepts as they like, without having to pay anyone or give credits to anyone. However, this also lowers the hurdle for smaller creatives, as they wouldn't have to check whether something can or can't be used due to licensing reasons.

## How does it differ from other projects?
While we have the utmost respect for other collaborative projects, the Public Domain Fantasy Project aims for a different goal. Most projects aim to create one continuous narrative on which people could build. This project instead is built to act as an encyclopedia, a reference work. There is no story, no narrative throughline. Everything is laid out bare, so that anyone can get inspiration for their own works.
